icatchers was entrusted with transforming the children’s area at Redcliffe Library, part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s initiative to modernise and revitalise community spaces. Following extensive renovation works at the library, we were tasked with designing and delivering a creative concept that would foster play, discovery and literacy while reflecting the local community and environment.
We had a clear vision and a well-defined brief but also faced unique challenges due to the fixed elements within the space. With a strong focus on aesthetics, functionality, and interactivity, we approached the project with a multi-stage planning process to ensure the best possible outcome for the client and the young readers who would enjoy the space.
Our Solutions to the Brief
The client’s brief emphasised the need for a modern, engaging and imaginative space that would seamlessly blend with the recently upgraded library interior. The goal was to create a vibrant, welcoming environment that encouraged children to interact with books, play and explore.
Key design solutions included:
- Themed Design Elements: Drawing inspiration from the local environment, we incorporated nature-inspired elements, soft curves and a colour palette that evoked the coastal and community feel of Redcliffe.
- Interactive Features: We introduced tactile elements such as interactive wall panels, sensory stations, and playful seating arrangements that would engage young visitors and enhance their learning experience.
- Custom Seating and Reading Nooks: Given the existing fixed shelving and alcoves, we designed bespoke seating solutions that complemented the architecture while providing comfortable and functional spaces for reading and storytelling.
- Integrated Play Areas: To encourage discovery and movement, we created a series of small, themed zones that invited children to explore different activities, from quiet reading corners to interactive play zones.
- Seamless Connection to the Outdoor Deck: Recognising the value of indoor-outdoor flow, we designed elements that encouraged movement between the interior space and the outdoor deck, providing additional reading and activity areas.
All these design elements were carefully curated to create a dynamic and inspiring space where children could immerse themselves in storytelling and creative exploration.
Challenges and Solutions
Despite the clear vision, bringing this project to life required careful navigation of several challenges, each addressed through a structured planning approach.
One of the primary challenges was working with fixed architectural features, including built-in shelving and an alcove that could not be removed. Instead of seeing these as limitations, we turned them into opportunities by designing around these elements, integrating them into the new theme and maximising their potential.
Ensuring a cohesive look with the recently renovated library was also essential. With the broader library upgrade already complete, our designs needed to complement the modernised interiors while maintaining a distinct identity for the children’s area. We carefully selected colours, materials and finishes that aligned with the existing aesthetic while enhancing the space’s playful character.
As a high traffic children’s area, durability and safety were paramount. We sourced robust materials designed to withstand frequent use while ensuring all interactive elements met safety standards. Rounded edges, non-toxic finishes and sturdy construction were integral to our final design choices, creating a secure environment for children to explore and learn.
Coordinating with suppliers and aligning with council schedules required agile project management. With supply chain disruptions impacting some material deliveries, we adapted our workflow to focus on components that could be completed in parallel, ensuring we stayed on track without compromising quality.
Multi-Stage Planning
Our planning process followed a structured approach to ensure seamless execution. The initial planning phase involved collaboration between our account, planning, and production managers to review the client’s strategic objectives, scope, timeline and risk assessment. This phase included in-depth discussions with Moreton Bay Regional Council to ensure our vision aligned with their expectations.
In the creative development phase, our account manager, project manager, and design director worked closely to translate the brief into a tangible concept. Through site visits, idea exploration, and design refinements, we crafted a balanced solution that combined aesthetics with practical functionality.
The final execution phase involved meticulous coordination between our production team, visual communication experts, and skilled tradespeople. Every detail, from material selection to installation logistics, was carefully managed to ensure precision and quality in the final outcome.
